Healthcare Facilities

From hospitals to research facilities, healthcare buildings are essential to the health of the world’s population, as well as medical innovation. Designing these structures requires a delicate balance of technical requirements with the needs of doctors and patients, but when done right, these designs can save lives.

Dimensional Innovations, an experiential design firm based in Kansas City, Mo., developed the immersive Nick’s Theater, located in the Gerdin Family lobby of the University of Iowa’s Stead Family Children’s Hospital. Patients can run two interactive games on the theater’s 32-foot-long screen, which uses Microsoft Kinect software. Researchers at the National Children’s Medical Center in Washington, D.C., have found that video games can provide a distraction that aids in pain relief.
