Salzburg, Austria’s Central Station remained in operation during reconstruction, a feat that required complex planning. Alteration of existing tracks had to be carefully timed and choreographed to make the transition as seamless as possible. The tracks and the platforms of the 1860s-era station are covered with a glass canopy and transparent membrane roof with pneumatic air-cushions.
On the sustainability front, the station features a geothermal system that provides all the energy necessary for cooling and heating. The project is expected to be complete by mid-2014, and has already earned the prestigious Austrian ‘Staatspreis Design’ award and the European Steel Award.
