New AISC guide tells how to design with structural steel

New AISC guide tells how to design with structural steel

Rob Cassidy | August 26, 2019

"Designing with Structural Steel: A Guide for Architects" is a new 80-page technical report from the American Institute of Steel Construction.

The publication provides architects with a primer on engineering basics (bay sizes, column sizes, floor framing depths); finishes, coating, and fire protection for structural steel; sound insulation to achieve STC and IIC ratings; sustainability/resilience; detailing (using structural steel with precast concrete panels, masonry, thin stone veneer panels, and limestone); and "AESS"—architecturally exposed structural steel.

Scott Melnick, SVP at AISC and Editor of Modern Steel Construction, told me that architects with as much as 10-15 years on the job—but who have limited experience with structural steel—could benefit from the publication. The accompanying website has even more information.

Take a chapter at a time and have a lunchtime review with colleagues.
