Cool coatings reduce heat islands

Jeff Alexander | December 28, 2017

Across the globe, many cities in industrialized countries are considerably hotter than the surrounding rural areas. With a temperature difference between cities and outlying areas of five to 10 degrees, the impact is significant.

Man-made structures such as buildings and roads absorb heat from the sun, especially in areas with little vegetation or soil moisture. This causes ambient temperatures to increase surface and ambient air temperatures. Urban heat islands can even cause changes in regional weather patterns, increase smog levels, and boost cooling costs.

As concern for increasing energy costs and environmental degradation increases, Valspar is responding with innovative products that lower energy costs and mitigate the heat island effect. Cool roofs with solar reflective Valspar coatings help stop heat islands from forming and lower the cooling cost of the project.

A lower surface temperature reduces the heat gain in the structure below. In the hottest months of the year, a standard roof surface can reach 150° F. A metal roof with a solar reflective coating can remain 50° F cooler, under the same circumstances. Cool roof criteria appear in national and local energy codes because of their impact on cooling costs and occupant comfort.
