BIG-D CONSTRUCTION of Salt Lake City adds 22 LEED Accredited Professionals

August 11, 2010

SALT LAKE CITY – Jan. 28, 2009 – Big-D Construction is painting the town green, announcing today that twenty-two of its employees recently became Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Green Building Rating System™ Accredited Professionals.

These new LEED accredited professionals raised the company’s total to 30 accredited professionals, ranging from superintendents to vice presidents.

"The accreditation of our leaders advances our principle commitment to learn, practice and teach green/sustainable design and construction as a core responsibility, “said Forrest McNabb, senior vice president of Big-D Construction.

Big-D Construction has completed four LEED Certified projects to date (25 percent of all LEED Certified projects in Utah), including its   corporate headquarters, which has achieved a LEED Gold certification and is one of the only LEED-certified buildings in Utah that is also on the historic registry.  Additionally, Big-D completed the University of Utah Health Sciences Building, which was the first LEED certified building for the University of Utah.

Big-D is currently working on 11 other projects from pre-construction to construction that are on track for LEED® Certification.  Three of these projects are anticipated to be LEED® Platinum, which is the highest LEED® Certification achievable.

LEED Professional Accreditation distinguishes building professionals with the knowledge and skills to successfully steward the LEED certification process. LEED Accredited Professionals (LEED APs) have demonstrated a thorough understanding of green building practices and principles and the LEED Rating System.

The LEED Green Building Rating System encourages and accelerates global adoption of sustainable green building and development practices through the creation and implementation of universally understood and accepted tools and performance criteria.

LEED is a third-party certification program and the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. LEED gives building owners and operators the tools they need to have an immediate and measurable impact on their buildings’ performance. LEED promotes a whole-building approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in five key areas of human and environmental health:

Sustainable site development
Water savings
Energy efficiency
Materials selection
Indoor environmental quality.
