Spectra Wins Awards for Hoover Dam, Ennis House Restoration

August 11, 2010

Spectra Company, the prominent historic restoration firm based in Pomona, CA, has been awarded the exacting historic preservation projects on two noted historic landmarks: The Hoover Dam -- one of Nevada's most popular tourist attractions and The Ennis House -- one of Frank Lloyd Wright's renowned residences in Los Angeles.

Of the famed Ennis House, Anthea Hartig, PhD, director, Western Office, National Trust for Historic Preservation, said, "The grandest of Frank Lloyd Wright's 'textile block' houses, the 1924 Ennis House combined the famed architect's longstanding interest in the sculptural qualities of concrete and his quest to design innovative buildings."

Both projects are scheduled to begin in early October and will be completed by December 1st, 2008.

Background on Hoover Dam

Begun in June 1933 and dedicated September 1935 (two years ahead of schedule), this concrete arch-gravity storage dam is among the largest and earliest of the Bureau of Reclamation's massive multiple-purpose dams providing electric power, flood control, and irrigation water. The Hoover Dam is a National Historic Landmark and has been rated by the American Society of Civil Engineers as one of America's Seven Modern Civil Engineering Wonders.

Background on Ennis House

Frank Lloyd Wright's magnificent Los Angeles masterpiece, built in 1924 for Charles and Mabel Ennis, is one of the first residences constructed of concrete blocks. This beautiful example of the genius of Wright has been studied by architects, architectural historians, artists and art lovers from practically every country in the world. The house is listed by the U.S. Department of the Interior in the National Register of Historic Places, it has been declared a Cultural Heritage Monument by the City of Los Angeles, and it has been designated a California State Landmark.

Spectra's restoration project on the Hoover Dam's Exhibit Hall and Auditorium includes restoration of travertine, terrazzo, concrete, metal restoration, historic hardware, auditorium seating and environmental remediation. The Ennis project includes restoration painting, ornamental woodwork, waterproofing and environmental remediation.

Spectra Company, founded in 1985, is the largest historic restoration company in California and specializes in a variety of restoration, preservation and conservation disciplines as well as waterproofing and environmental remediation.
