With the Covid-19 pandemic under somewhat greater control, AEC firms around the country are busy opening new offices and hiring and promoting key staffs to keep up with ever-growing demaind for their services.

 

SCB OPENS AN OFFICE IN THE BOSTON MARKET ... 

Architecture giant SCB (#21 on BD+C's 2020 Giants 400 Architecture Firm rankings), headquarted in Chicago, has opened and office in Boston, which geographically balances its established West Coast offices in San Francisco and Seattle.

“For more than 30 years, SCB has been a dynamic force along the East Coast, designing major commercial and institutional projects in Baltimore, Boston, Florida, New York, Northern Virginia, Philadelphia, and Washington DC,” said SCB President Chris Pemberton, AIA. “Now, with our new Boston-based leadership team, we are primed to take our national practice to the next level.”

Leading SCB Boston is Executive Director and Principal Clara Wineberg, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, who has extensive experience in large-scale multifamily residential, office, life sciences, and mixed-use developments, notably Hub50House, a 38-story residential tower at the Hub on Causeway, Boston Properties’ 1.5-million-sf transit-oriented development and expansion of the Boston Garden. A longtime Bostonian, and former Principal at Sasaki, SCB Principal Bryan Irwin, AIA, LEED AP is directing the East Coast office’s campus environments studio

 

... AS SMITHGROUP MOVES TO THE HUB'S SEAPORT DISTRICT

The Boston office of SmithGroup (#6 in BD+C's 2020 Giants 400 A/E firms) has relocated to the LEED Platinum 101 Seaport Building in the Seaport District. The new 11,500-sf office space overlooks the redeveloping neighborhood and Boston Harbor.

“We believe that attitudes about in-office work will continue to shift over the coming years,” says John Moorhead, design leader at the Boston office. “Our search for new workspace focused on finding a space that would allow us to enhance our culture by building community among our staff and with our partners in the industry, while also being flexible to changing work modes.” 

Said Mark Jussaume, director of the Boston office, "Our new office is an important component of a larger ecosystem where we will actively engage clients, strategic partners, and our staff."

 

RKTB ARCHITECTS ELEVATES 3 TO ASSOCIATE

As the New York building sector pace heats up, design firm RKTB Architects has promoted three staffers to Associate:

  • Stephanie Oestreich, AIA, CCCA, LEED AP, who is currently managing several projects for the New York City Housing Authority in Brooklyn, including the design of a new heating plant, as well as construction administration for a condominium on the Upper West Side.
  • Nelya Sachakova, AIA, a Certified Passive House Designer whose portfolio includes Capacity & Capital Improvement Projects for the New York City School Construction Authority, as well as multi-family residential buildings.
  • Milan Savanovic, who recently managed the rehabilitation of 21 buildings for the Fifth Avenue Committee, eight buildings for the Mutual Housing Association of New York, and nine buildings for the New York City Housing Authority.

“All three of these talented designers have become essential, indispensable parts of our team,” said Carmi Bee, FAIA, president and principal in charge of design for RKTB.  “Each of them brings to the table a unique perspective on the city in which we live and work, New York."

 

ALENA SAKALOUSKI JOHNSON, RYAN COMPANIES' NEW VP OF ARCHITECTURE FOR HEALTHCARE

Ryan Companies US has a new Vice President of Architecture for Healthcare: Alena Sakalouski Johnson, AIA, ACHA. She leads a team of 15 healthcare architects and designers located across the country.

Since arriving at Ryan four years ago, Johnson has been nvolved in such notable healthcare projects the Valley Ambulatory Surgery Center, St. Charles, Ill.; St. Peters Ambulatory Surgery Center & Clinic, St. Peters, Mo.; the University of St. Thomas Center for Well-Being, St. Paul, Minn.; and an upcoming state-of-the-art Heart Center for Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

 

RADKE, CIGANA MOVE UP AT JACOBSEN CONSTRUCTION

Jacobsen Construction Company, based in Salt Lake City, Utah, has made two new appointments in executive company leadership.

Matt Radke, who joined the company in 1995, has been named Chief Operating Officer. He became Vice President of Construction in 2018 and Executive Vice President of Construction in 2020. He will assume strategic responsibility for Jacobsen’s healthcare, religious, and national market segments; self-performed concrete teams; project safety, scheduling, and employee training personnel; and its vertically integrated Jacobsen Building Services and Jacobsen Flooring Services teams.

Dennis Cigana, a 22-year veteran at Jacobsen, is the new Chief Development Officer (CDO). Cigana, who became Vice President of Estimating in 2010 and Executive Vice President of Preconstruction in 2017, will provide high-level strategic direction in business development, project development, preconstruction project management, and estimating services. 

 

TWO EXECUTIVE HIRES AT THE BOLDT COMPANY

The Boldt Company, headquartered in Appleton, Wis. (#62 on BD+C's Top GC Giants), has made two executive-level hires:

  • Heather Stoffel is the new senior director of healthcare and will focus on client relations, preconstruction, and team leadership for customers across the region from Boldt’s Wisconsin River Valley office in Stevens Point, Wis. Stoffel has 25 years' experience in the construction industry in Wisconsin and Michigan. She earned a degree in civil engineering from the University of Wisconsin–Madison.
  • Linda Rosati is Boldt's business development director in the Detroit office. She has more than 20 years' experience in operational and business development leadership. Rosati earned a degree in business management and marketing from Michigan's Oakland University and currently chairs the communications committee for the Commercial Real Estate Women Network of Detroit.

 

NEW GULF STATES PRESIDENT FOR ADOLFSON & PETERSON

 

Will Pender is the new president of the Gulf States region of Adolfson & Peterson Construction (#63 on BD+C’s 2020 Giants 400 Top General Contractors rankings.

Pender will be responsible for strategic business operations in Texas and the surrounding states, including the new PGA of America headquarters in Frisco, Texas.

He brings 15 years’ experience in the construction industry, having served as regional vice president for TEAL System, a cloud-based solution that reduces construction and operational costs in multifamily developments, and as vice president and client director for Rogers-O’Brien Construction, Dallas. He also previously served as owner/vice president of Entegra Construction and Development.
