The 44,000-sq-ft. Howard Performing Arts Center at Andrews University, Berrien Springs, Mich., will house rehearsal, recording and performance facilities for the university's orchestra, symphony and chorus. "Given the nature of the facility, our primary objective was to utilize the most efficient form and materials for optimal acoustic performance," says project designer Ayers Morison of the architect/engineer, HarleyEllis Design, Southfield, Mich. Fiskars Inc., St. Joseph, Mich., is construction manager for the $10.5 million facility, which is scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2003.

Already considered the largest hospital in the San Fernando Valley, Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank will grow with the addition of a 204,000-sq.-ft., seven-story building that will replace inpatient beds and house a new outpatient center. The Santa Monica office of Detroit-based SmithGroup is architect for the $60 million expansion, which will add 153 beds to the existing 455-bed facility. The Newport Beach, Calif., office of McCarthy, St. Louis, is general contractor.

A 34,000-sq.-ft. Marine Corps Training Center in Lafayette, La., will be one of the first Naval Reserve buildings to incorporate new Department of Defense antiterrorism/force protection standards for hardened construction and standoff regulations. The Orlando office of VOA Associates, Chicago, and Gibbs Construction, New Orleans, are partnering on the design/build project.

The design for a new 12-screen Century Theater in San Mateo, Calif., was inspired by the historic character of city's downtown, according to the project's architect, Fehlman LaBarre Architecture Planning of San Diego. Wentz Group, San Carlos, Calif., is general contractor for the $8.2 million facility, which is scheduled for completion in November.
