Portland, Oregon, apartments get a custom rain screen

Concerned with water intrusion for the 245,000-sf Burlington Apartments in Portland, Ore., local architect Ankrom Moisan Associated Architects specified a custom rain screen for the exterior of the 10-story structure. The architect worked closely with engineers from Pella Corp. on the system, which combines the brick cladding, exterior sealant, receptor, and windows to form a water-resistant barrier. The wall design also integrates an air barrier composed of a weather-resistant barrier and an interior seal. The airspace between the rain screen and air barrier allows for pressure equalization. The complex features Pella Architect Series windows, Designer Series patio doors, and ProLine patio doors for the apartments, and Pella Commercial doors and fixed windows for the building's storefronts.
