A new project near Copenhagen pushes the boundaries of the term "mixed use," combining a waste-to-energy plant with a ski resort. The Amagerforbræ [1]nding Energy Plant [1], designed by Bjarke Ingels Group [2], will feature an incinerator wrapped in mesh, forming an artificial hill. BIG's theme of "hedonistic sustainability" suffuses this effort to turn an industrial facility into a tourist destination. The 95,000 sm facility will provide ample room for a ski slope featuring more than 1,500 m of runs, designed by German firms Topotek 1 [3] and Man Made Land [4]. Recycled synthetic granular material will be used instead of snow, facilitating year-round skiing. A smoke-ring generator will make use of water vapor emitted by the incinerator, creating an impressive display combined with lasers. Completion is projected for 2016.
