
The former Filene’s department store, a longtime landmark in Boston’s Downtown Crossing neighborhood, will be renovated and set against a new 606-foot-tall glass skyscraper. The design by Handel Architects will renovate the property’s original 1912 building—conceived by noted architect Daniel Burnham—and build a new tower at a total cost of $615 million.The plan by Millennium Partners of New York calls for 500 residences, 230,000 sf of retail stores, 200,000 sf of offices, and 525 underground parking spaces.
