Macomb, Illinois aldermen voted to recommend that the city not adopt 2012 international building and residential code standards requiring the installation of overhead sprinkler systems in newly constructed one-family and two-family homes.
City Building Inspector Dale Firof estimated that a sprinkler system might add as much as $3,500 to the cost of a new home. Macomb might not be able to avoid the requirement, though, as the state is considering adopting a life safety code.
