The first phase of a $1 billion renovation of a San Diego mall features a transformation of a vacant Robinsons-May building into 14-screen ArcLight premium cinema and a fitness club. The Robinsons-May site hasn’t had a permanent tenant since 2005.
The project, approved three years ago by the San Diego City Council, was delayed because of the recession. A key component of the renovation, by Australian-based developer Westfield, is a 70-shop-area that will get dramatic elevated facades, some going up to the roof line, to replace large overhangs and bulkheads. Project plans call for adding 750,000 sf of retail space to the current 1 million sf mall. BD+C
