EE&K Architects and Engineers—now part of Perkins Eastman—and Moody Nolan will design the new 250,000-sf Dunbar Senior High School in Washington, D.C. Inspired by the school’s historic 1917 building, the team designed a new south-facing entryway to reflect the seriousness of education while an adjacent academic wing draws from early 20th-century aesthetics with bay windows and towers. Faculty offices are located on each level of the building, while the historic armory is at the heart of the school, connecting classrooms, sports fields, recreational facilities, and cafeteria.
