The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association recently held its 2008 Spring Meeting Series in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
Meetings on the first day were hosted by Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
Among those addressing the group were Chris Salazar, vice president of sales and marketing at Karnak and immediate past president of the Roof Coatings Manufacturers Association, who spoke on "Cooling and Sustaining Asphalt Roofs with Coatings"; Stephanie Stern of the Cool Roof Rating Council, who discussed emerging research regarding reflectivity as it relates to asphalt shingles; Dr. William Miller, a senior research engineer with the Building Envelopes Program at ORNL, who discussed "Energy Savings in Steep Slope Roofing Using Above Sheath Ventilation"; and Dr. James Hoff, executive director, Center for Environmental Innovation in Roofing, who spoke on "Life-Cycle Assessment and the LEED Green Building Rating System."
The staff of the Building Envelopes Program (BEP) of the Building Technology Center at ORNL conducted tours of ongoing low-slope and steep-slope roofing experiments. Additionally, ARMA members were shown the test chambers used for current research on the thermal performance of the exterior envelopes of buildings. Related computer models and simulations were described as well.
The Buildings Technology Center (BTC) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is devoted to the development of technologies that improve the energy efficiency and environmental compatibility of residential and commercial buildings. Established by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Building Technology State and Community Programs, the BTC is a designated "National User Facility," which means that its facilities are available to manufacturers, universities and other organizations for proprietary and nonproprietary research and development.
André Desjarlais, program manager for the Building Envelopes Program, was presented with an Industry Appreciation Award by Reed Hitchcock, executive director of ARMA. Since joining the BTC at Oak Ridge in 1991, Desjarlais has conducted a variety of experiments on roofs and whole building systems.
