Old seaplane hangar in Seattle now functions as an athletic club

By Leslie Streicher, Associate Editor | July 22, 2011
An old Sand Point Naval Air Station seaplane hangar from the 1930s now serves as the Arena Sports and Magnuson Athletic Club in Seattle. Designed by Clark Design Group PLLC, the building features 80,000 sf of high bay space and massive sliding doors, providing ample space for large indoor soccer fields. Initially listed as an endangered historic property in 2009, the hangar has large steel structures and wood roof decking, which designers left exposed. Interiors reach 50 feet in height, allowing builders to construct an upper-level mezzanine area to house workout equipment. Large hangar windows were also kept in place to promote energy efficiency.
