Parking structures group launches LEED-type program for parking garages

Responding to the growing desire for more livable communities and rising concern about our planet, the Green Parking Council (GPC), an affiliate of the International Parking Institute (IPI), launched the Green Garage Certification program.
 
The program is the parking industry equivalent of the U.S.

Nonresidential construction spending expands in April

Nonresidential construction spending inched up in April according to the June 2 release by the U.S. Census Bureau. This is the second consecutive month spending has increased following March’s upwardly revised spending report. 

Nonresidential construction spending expanded by 0.4% on a monthly basis in April and has risen 3.9% on a year-over-year basis. Spending for the month totaled $570.6 billion on a seasonally adjusted, annualized basis.

Libeskind's latest skyscraper breaks ground in the Philippines

The Century Spire, Daniel Libeskind's latest project, has just broken ground in Century City, southwest of Manila. It is meant to accommodate apartments and offices; residential units will range from one-bedrooms to penthouses, Dezeen reports.

The crown of the tower will be broken into three pieces, putting a unique silhouette on the city skyline.

The Cobb County Board of Commissioners voted to approve American Builders 2017 as the construction manager at risk (construction manager) to oversee the construction of the new Atlanta Braves ballpark, which is scheduled to open in early 2017.

HUD to spend nearly $1 billion on these six novel resiliency projects for NYC and NJ

The winners of the Rebuild by Design competition, an program from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development have been announced. The competition was created after Hurricane Sandy to encourage innovative architectural solutions to protect American cities that are vulnerable to extreme weather events.

Market update: A difficult first quarter for construction spending comes to an end

This year's unusually difficult winter took its toll on construction activity. Nonetheless, first quarter spending for all the major groups was up compared to the same period in 2013.

The U.S. Census Bureau reported that total construction spending advanced 0.2% in March to $942.5 billion at a seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR). First quarter not seasonally adjusted (NSA) spending was 8.3% higher than the same period a year ago.
