$44.5 million Centennial Hall opens at University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire

The new, $44.5 million Centennial Hall has opened on the campus of the University of Wisconsin (UW)-Eau Claire. National architecture and engineering firm SmithGroupJJR partnered with La Crosse, Wisconsin-based River Architects to design the 182,000-square-foot building.

Centennial Hall houses the College of Education and Human Sciences and consolidates teacher education that was previously split among three buildings dating back to the 1950s. It is the first new academic building on the UW-Eau Claire campus in more than 30 years.

First look: Jeanne Gang reinterprets San Francisco Bay windows in new skyscraper scheme

Famed Chicago architect Jeanne Gang is headed westward. On July 10, San Francisco’s newest tower proposal was unveiled, the San Francisco Chronicle reports, and it will be a 400-foot-tall tower designed by Gang.

Renderings show that the planned residential tower will be a tier of bay windows placed slightly askew on top of each other, resulting in a flowing, twisting-effect.

Are these LEGO-like blocks the future of construction?

They're not really LEGOs—they just look like them. Smart Bricks (or S-Bricks for short) are a patent-pending innovation designed by Kite Bricks. Incorporating high-strength concrete, the blocks may make buildings more rapid, cheap and energy-efficient to construct.

Like the iconic Danish construction toys, S-Bricks come in a variety of forms for different functions and can all connect together. A special adhesive designed to come with S-Bricks eliminates the need of cement.

Foster + Partners unveils triple-glazed tower for RMK headquarters

Designs for the headquarters of Russian company RMK, one of the world’s leading producers of copper, were released last Tuesday by British architecture firm Foster + Partners.

The plan for the building in Yekaterinburg is to rethink the conventional cellular office and tailor it to how RMK operates. The interiors consist of more intimate, domestic scaled workspaces instead of the currently popular large open space.

Nonresidential construction starts up 34% in June

Reed Construction Data has announced that the dollar value of construction starts in June, excluding residential activity, surged 34% versus May. The figures are in "current" dollars, meaning they are not adjusted for inflation.

The individual month of June, at $32.0 billion, was one of the strongest in Reed's entire database. To find a similarly high volume, one has to look back at June 2008, just before the Great Recession really took hold.
