Work starts on Jean Nouvel-designed European Patent Office in the Netherlands [slideshow]

Construction on the European Patent Office building in Rijswijk, the Netherlands, started last week with a foundation-stone laying ceremony.

The building was co-designed by architects Jean Nouvel, based in Paris, and Diederik Dam, based in Amsterdam.

With around 80,000 sm and a budget of €205 million self-financed by the EPO, it will be one of the biggest office construction sites ever in the Netherlands until its completion in 2017.

San Antonio green lights multimodal transit center

Last week, the Board of Directors of VIA Metropolitan Transit in San Antonio, Texas, officially approved plans previously presented by the architecture design team from EE&K a Perkins Eastman company to construct Phase 2 of the Westside Multimodal Transit Center. This construction award comes mere weeks before the groundbreaking, which is scheduled for July.

Autodesk acquires design studio The Living, will create Autodesk Studio

The Living, David Benjamin's design studio, has been acquired by Autodesk. Combined, the two will create the Autodesk Studio (part of Autodesk Research), which will "create new types of buildings, public installations, prototypes and architectural environments," Autodesk's blog states.

The Living has seven staff members at the moment, as well as a handful of part-time collaborators.

Zaha Hadid's flowing Heydar Aliyev Center named Design of the Year for 2014

The Design Museum's Design of the Year Award for 2014 has been awarded to Zaha Hadid's Heydar Aliyev Center. Hadid is not only the first woman to win the top prize, but the center is the first architectural project to win the overall competition. 
 
The building, full of undulating curves and large glass windows to let in lots of natural light, is located in Baku, Azerbaijan.
