Minneapolis joins energy benchmarking trend for commercial buildings

Minneapolis is the latest major metro to require large commercial buildings to benchmark and disclose their energy and water use. Beginning in 2015, private commercial buildings >50,000 sf will have to report their energy and water use to the city, which is the first in the Midwest to require the procedure. The policy is intended, in part, to enhance the power of sustainability as a marketing tool.

'Vegetative tower' apartments to revive NYC site

A Manhattan site formerly slated for development with a "tower of cubes"—a now-defunct project by Santiago Calatrava—will be revived with a 998-foot, 300,000-sf apartment building by Morali Architects. Developer Cord Meyer selected Anthony Morali's design for 80 South Street, which will include a hotel at the base and a series of integrated garden spaces. 5 factors to consider when designing a shade system
The Portland, Ore., office of engineering firm Glumac uses a combination of automated shading and dimmable lighting for daylight management. Glumac specified the Lutron system, which uses solar-adaptive shades that adjust based on the position of the sun to eliminate glare and reduce heat gain. Wireless daylight and vacancy sensors control the amount of electric lighting that is used in each room based on the amount of daylight in the area or whether the room is occupied. Designing a shade system is more complex than picking out basic white venetian blinds. Here are five elements to consider when designing an interior shade system.

Windows not only transform the façade of a building, the natural light that they allow inside is a vital tool in highlighting a building’s interior design elements.

But sunlight is not always needed—or even wanted. At some point in the day, direct sunlight will enter the space, causing glare and heat gain.
Enter the interior shade system.
