Group of West Coast civil engineers developing building standards for tsunamis
A group of civil engineers from around the western U.S. is developing additions to the building code to address the threat of a tsunami. The engineers are taking into account the impact of the tsunami wave itself, as well as debris and the scouring around foundations as the water recedes. Some possible solutions include building on stilts along the coast or including breakaway walls on lower floors to let water flow through.

AIA College of Fellows awards 2013 Latrobe Prize for 'The City of 7 Billion'
The American Institute of Architects (AIA) College of Fellows has awarded the 2013 Latrobe Prize of $100,000 for the proposal, “The City of 7 Billion.”
The research will study the impact of population growth and resource consumption on the built and natural environment at the scale of the entire world as a single urban entity. An antidote to the fragmentary analyses of current practices, this project will remove arbitrary boundaries and reframe the entire world as a continuous topography of development: the city of 7 billion.
The project team includes Bimal Mendis and Joyce Hsiang of the Yale School of Architecture and Plan B Architecture & Urbanism, LLC.

Holl videos discuss design features of Chengdu ' Porosity Block' project
Architect Steven Holl has released two short films describing the development of Sliced Porosity Block - CapitaLand Raffles City, a 3 million-sf project completed last fall in Chengdu, China. The unusual site combines concrete and glass towers with large public plazas and water features. 'Pop-up' proposal would create movable cultural venue for NYC
The Culture Shed, a proposed 170,000-sf project for New York City's Hudson Yards development, could be the ultimate in "pop-up" facilities. As designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro and David Rockwell of Rockwell Group, the structure would consist of a movable synthetic shell that would slide out to cover a public plaza. Programming for the space could be diverse, from Fashion Week events to art installations to performances featuring collaborations between musicians and visual artists.

Pakistan to get world's tallest tower in $45 billion deal
Could Karachi become the next Abu Dhabi?
That's what investors are envisioning with a $45 billion mega deal that will fund construction of several massive developments in the Pakistani city, including a mixed-use tower that they say will dwarf the 2,722-foot-tall Burj Khalifa.
The scheme, which is financially backed, in part, by Pakistani real estate billionaire Malik Riaz Hussain and Abu Dhabi Group, also includes construction of replicas of the Seven Wonders Of The World and four different cities: a sports city, international city, medical city, and education city.
