Turning pond scum into a community jewel
Searching for an ideal location for a new community center and park, the city of El Paso, Texas, selected an unlikely spot: a detention pond that was riddled with crime and ignored by the development community. The city challenged the Building Team to turn the 100-acre detention basin on the west side of town into its new Westside Community Park and Recreation Center.

Last November, Chicago opened the $3.8 million 24,000-sf Household Chemicals and Electronics Recycling Center on the rehabilitated site of an old city ...

'Green Exchange' To Cater to Eco-Friendly Businesses
Two entrepreneurs, David and Douglas Baum of Baum Realty Group, are converting an old lamp-making factory in Chicago's Logan Square neighborhood into an exchange building that will house only green-oriented businesses. The building itself, at one time home to the Frederick Cooper Lamp Co., is being revamped to attain LEED Silver certification.

A tech-friendly cladding system
Metal cladding interfered with communications at UC San Diego’s advanced technology research facility, so the Building Team found a substitute that was visually high-tech but remained invisible to transmission signals.

Simulator puts sailors under fire at Battle Stations
The USS Trayer has been attacked at night. A deck has collapsed, depositing the wreckage of the battleship's galley onto a crew barracks. As water and fire sprays into the ship's hull, sailors have to scramble to crawl through twisted metal and plastic and pull a wounded shipmate out of the debris and smoke and carry him up a ladder to safety.
