Pentagon plan

Just days after the Sept. 11 terrorist attack destroyed sections of the Pentagon, government officials announced plans to rebuild the damaged structure, and to continue ongoing renovations to the 5 million-sq.-ft. building. Web site details the damages sustained by the Pentagon after a jet struck the building.

Mechanically inclined

Mechanical system design software developed by a mechanical engineering firm for use in-house is now available to all A/E/C firms. Salt Lake City-based Van Boerum & Frank Associates created HVAC Solution in 1994 to increase productivity and reduce errors. The Windows-based software calculates mixed-air temperature, pipe sizes, equipment schedules and more.

Online design tool enables A/E/C professionals to manipulate an array of laminated glass designs and colors to create custom glazing designs. Designs can be viewed in 3-D and can be e-mailed to other project team members.

IAQ assurance

Smoke, mold, dust and vehicle exhaust can all wreak havoc on a building's indoor air quality (IAQ). The Building Owners and Managers Association International (BOMA) has launched an online IAQ resource center to help professionals identify causes of problems, establish management systems and recognize preventive maintenance opportunities.
