New ballpark for Fort Wayne Tin Caps gets protection from the weather

August 11, 2010

(Valley Forge, Pa.) – July 9, 2009 - The downtown section of Fort Wayne, Indiana’s second-largest city, is preparing for an exciting rebirth, with construction underway for Harrison Square, a mixed-use revitalization project.

The goal of the Harrison Square project is to create a new community gathering place for Fort Wayne, as well as spark significant economic growth and new jobs.  Once complete, Harrison Square will feature a 60-unit condominium complex; a 250-room hotel; 30,000 square feet of retail space; and a 900-space parking garage, all surrounding the development’s centerpiece — Parkview Field, a 6,000-seat ballpark for the Fort Wayne Tin Caps, the city’s minor league baseball team. Designed by leading U.S.-based architectural firm HOK Sports Venue Event, with Weigand Construction, Inc., of Fort Wayne, as general contractor, the ballpark features retro design elements that take cues from the historical architecture of the city’s downtown area.

One feature that will help shore up the defenses of the ballpark’s exterior walls against wind and rain is CertainTeed Gypsum GlasRoc Sheathing, which was installed on the entire exterior skin of the two-level ballpark. Weigand Construction subcontracted the sheathing installation, which amounts to approximately 45,000 square feet of GlasRoc, to Fort Wayne exterior contractor Rosema Construction, Inc.

“Due to the sheer size of baseball stadiums, construction can be a lengthy process,” says Joe Hoyos, Territory Manager for CertainTeed Gypsum. “Because of this, it is extremely important to install an exterior sheathing product that is durable and resistant to bad weather that may threaten the evolving structure. GlasRoc Sheathing’s durability and water and fire resistance will help protect the stadium and add to its sustainability.”

Rosema Construction began work in June, 2008, with a crew of 25 and finished Parkview Field earlier this year, in time for opening day in April. The crew has found GlasRoc easy to work with and appreciates how well it holds together.

“We’ve noticed that GlasRoc holds its matting better than other products, especially in rain and other bad weather,” says John Devries, Project Manager for Rosema Construction. “We have also appreciated the on-site tech support we’ve received from our local CertainTeed Gypsum rep to help ensure a smooth installation.”

Featuring patented Embedded Glass Reinforced Gypsum(TM) (EGRG(TM)) technology, GlasRoc Sheathing provides long-term protection from weather exposure, which is important during the construction phase of a building. The unique EGRG technology combines a paperless gypsum surface with reinforcing glass mats that are fully embedded into a water-resistant gypsum core, creating a naturally moisture- and mold-resistant product.  GlasRoc exterior sheathing helps building professionals qualify projects for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED(R)) credits through the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).

CertainTeed Gypsum offers a broad range of gypsum and finishing products for interior and exterior needs.  This, in combination with the full range of affiliate CertainTeed Corporation’s building products, provides architects, contractors, builders and dealers one partner to provide service and support for commercial and residential building projects.
