Revit BIM Experience Award
RTKL Associates Inc.
Interview with Douglas Palladino, Principal, and Hiroshi Jacobs, Associate
1. What differentiates RTKL in the marketplace?
RTKL is a global architecture, engineering, and planning firm with more than 1,000 professionals in multiple offices, including Baltimore, Chicago, Dallas, London, Los Angeles, Madrid, Miami, Shanghai, Tokyo, and Washington, D.C. We are committed to being a leader in the use of building information modeling (BIM). We began our first BIM project in late 2003 and have over 50 current projects utilizing Autodesk Revit.
2. Why is BIM valuable to architects and engineers?
BIM enables us to design better buildings! Using BIM allows for a better understanding of the building before construction is begun. BIM provides more than just a 3D model of the building; we are able to use this technology as a crystal ball to see the future and to more completely understand the building and its relation to the environment.
3. How can project teams benefit from working within an integrated building information model?
Our Food and Drug Administration (FDA) project team found the multidisciplinary Revit model to be extremely helpful in design for cross-collaboration with our engineers. We were able to immediately see the effects of design changes and run interference checks to ensure proper coordination. In addition, working with Revit in an integrated BIM environment creates better communication between the team members.
4. Why did RTKL decide to move to the Revit BIM platform?
The choice to go with Autodesk Revit as our BIM software platform was made for a variety of reasons, including its ease of use, flexibility as a design tool, true database qualities, and an existing relationship with Autodesk. We find the program to be very intuitive and very consistent in the way that handles all tasks, which makes learning the program less of a challenge to new users, and therefore implementation is easier and faster.
5. How do you envision the industry changing in the future?
The industry is going to embrace BIM, there’s no doubt about it. More and more firms are successfully implementing and using BIM technology to design and build better buildings than were previously possible. As more and more firms become familiar with BIM software, you will start to see creative uses for the data that is inherent to building information modeling. The most successful use of the technology in the future will also involve a closer collaboration between owner, architect and contractor as all parties come together before, during, and after construction.
RTKL received the Revit BIM Experience Award for its advanced level of integrated BIM practice, utilizing the Revit model for early informed design decision-making, energy analysis, and coordination with the builder and client. RTKL’s internal Applications Administrator group is responsible for training and implementation. Autodesk Consulting served as a strategic partner to RTKL over the past four years, advising on best practices and providing just-in-time services to support projects.
