HOK Houston Completes Expansion of Methodist Sugar Land Hospital

August 11, 2010

HOK Houston has completed the expansion of Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, located at 16655 Southwest Freeway in Sugar Land, TX. The 341,000-square-foot expansion has more than tripled the hospital’s size and is the largest expansion in the caregiver’s history. HOK Houston was selected by The Methodist Healthcare System to assist with the two-phase expansion of the Sugar Land campus. The company challenged HOK to create a design that would maintain the “Methodist look and feel.”

“This expansion is at the core of a seven-year development plan for the Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s 37-acre campus, which is located in one of the fastest growing counties in the United States,” said Ron Smith, HOK Houston senior associate, Healthcare. “HOK built upon the existing facility, complementing the scale and palate of materials with generous daylight in public circulation and waiting areas, and in staff lounges, that promote a soothing, calming environment.”

The new hospital is organized around a multistory atrium, developed by HOK, to align with The Methodist Hospital System’s elements of identity for its four existing hospitals. Healing gardens and landscaping are incorporated on the campus with specially chosen elements that offer calm and peaceful settings to help support the healing environment.

In the early design phase, HOK Houston helped the hospital leadership evaluate expansion options, including the purchase of 19 adjacent acres and the separation of the new expansion from the existing building. The separation afforded the hospital full and uninterrupted use of the existing facility during construction.
