gkkworks To Work On Senior Center

By Staff | August 11, 2010

gkkworks, an architecture and construction services firm, has been named construction manager by the city of Newport Beach for construction of a larger community senior center.

The 35,000-square-foot, three-building complex — —also to be called the OASIS Senior Center — will replace the existing 23,000-square-foot facility on the same 4.92-acre site. Construction is expected to begin in March and conclude in 19 months, said gkkworks Project Manager Kim Harvey, who added that the anticipated bid date to select a general contractor would be in late January. The architect is Robert R. Coffee, Architects & Associates of Newport Beach.

Similar to the existing facility it will replace, the new center is planned as a campus of individual buildings organized around a central landscaped courtyard. The scale of the facility is broken down into separate wings housing educational classrooms, art and crafts programs, health and fitness activities, social and assembly functions, and administrative offices. Total design and construction cost is $21 million.

The project has been designed for a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)-certified silver rating by the Washington, D.C.—based United States Green Building Council.
