Gilbane builds business instructional facility at University of Illinois

August 11, 2010

Gilbane Building Company has completed construction on the 164,000-square-foot Business Instructional Facility at the University of Illinois, Champlain. The building accommodates the MBA, Undergraduate Affairs and Accounting programs, as well as off-campus guests. The four-story structure includes a five-story glass commons/courtyard garden atrium, a 300-seat auditorium, vaulted zinc roofing clad in photovoltaic tiles and tiered classrooms with glare-free daylighting. Gilbane’s Midwest regional office oversaw the work.

Designed by architect Cesar Pelli, and named ‘Best of 2008’ Project of the Year by Midwest Construction magazine, the brick and limestone building is seeking LEED Gold certification, incorporating features to reduce energy consumption by as much as 75% in comparison to older campus structures. The facility’s interior is designed to encourage interaction and teamwork among students, as well as accommodate alumni events and corporate receptions. In addition to the auditorium, the first floor includes a café, student lounges, study areas, a corporate recruitment center and multi-purpose interview rooms. Two upper floors feature state-of-the-art classrooms, while the fourth floor on the east wing houses faculty offices and meeting spaces.
