Firestone projects recognized for roofing excellence

February 14, 2013
Bridgestone Americas Technical Center, Akron, Ohio, received the RoofPoint Advancing Sustainable Roofing Award.

Firestone Building Products has been awarded the 2012 RoofPoint Excellence in Design Award in two categories: Global Leadership and Advancing Sustainable Roofing. The 2012 RoofPoint Excellence in Design Awards recognizes the best in design and installation of long-lasting, energy efficient, environmentally friendly roof systems. Annual award winners are selected from projects that best exemplify the mission and meet the criteria of RoofPoint.

RoofPoint is a voluntary, consensus-based green rating system developed by the Center for Environmental Innovation in Roofing to provide a means for building owners and designers to select nonresidential roof systems based on long-term energy and environmental benefits. RoofPoint is intended to help validate that new and replacement roof systems are designed, installed, and maintained according to the best modern sustainable practices.

Lowe's Etobicoke, Toronto, was recognized with the Global Leadership Award, given to projects that have demonstrated the best application of RoofPoint beyond the borders of the U.S. Firestone products used include 80 mil UltraPly TPO Platinum membrane, V-Force Vapor Barrier membrane, and UltraPly TPO Walkway Pads. The Platinum PV program has been used to transform the rooftop of this warehouse store into a solar power system.

Bridgestone Americas Technical Center, Akron, Ohio, received the Advancing Sustainable Roofing Award. This 260,000-sf LEED Gold project features a roofing system that combines RubberGard EPDM and EcoWhite EPDM membranes. The system is flexible in cold climates and can cut energy expenditures by ~8%, according to the manufacturer.
