Environmental Systems Design expands presence in the Middle East

January 6, 2011

ESD (Environmental Systems Design, Inc.), an international leader in the design of high performance building systems and sustainable design of the built environment, has expanded its presence in the Middle East by forming an alliance with SDC (Saudi Diyar Consultants), one of the region’s major architectural/engineering design firms.

“The purpose of this alliance is to offer the benefits of ESD’s experience in high performance building design for large and complex buildings while supplementing the strength of SDC’s Middle East market presence and resources,” said Raj Gupta, President, ESD.

“With locations throughout the Middle East, SDC is an ideal partner for ESD as we seek to expand our international footprint and expand our goal of providing collaborative integrated designs,” said Mehdi Jalayerian, principal in charge of ESD’s international and commercial projects division.

ESD’s  entry into the Middle East market began over 20 years ago when developing design for the National Commercial Bank of Jeddah. The firm recently opened an office in Abu Dhabi to facilitate execution of its projects in the United Arab Emirates and this alliance will be based in SDC’s office in Jeddah. ESD has engineered some of the most sophisticated projects in the Middle East, including Masdar Headquarters and Emirates Palace Hotel in Abu Dhabi; The Lagoons in Dubai, UAE; and the UAE University Information Technology Building in Al Ain Campus. The firms have collaborated on projects in the past including the Lamar Towers in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

SDC has offices in four locations throughout the KSA (Kingdom of Saudi Arabia) as well as offices in Lebanon, Egypt, and Philippines. The company’s diverse portfolio of commercial, institutional, residential, hospitality, health care, and urban design projects includes such notable facilities as King Saud University Endowment, Lamar Towers, Mada Towers, Dubai Towers and King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia; KAIA Royal Terminal at the Jeddah Airport; Rotana Resort in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt; and the Islamic Conference Center in Dakar Senegal.

Nafez Jundi, President of SDC, believes the ESD alliance will bring international experience and technology for sustainable design, LEED and high performance buildings within the Kingdom and will help implement these design standards for large developments in Saudi Arabia. “This cooperation will provide U.S. and other international architects and consultants with a Saudi-based architecture/engineering firm that can assist in the preparation of first class design documents to meet international standards,” he said.
