Code changes for escalators

Code changes for escalators

By Staff | August 11, 2010

The National Elevator Industry, Inc. (NEII) is presenting a short animation that will inform you about recent changes made to the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators, ASME A17.1, aimed to improve rider safety.

The presentation was developed as a tool to educate you about compliance with the new ADL-developed escalator step/skirt performance index and related code changes, and includes information on equipment upgrade options, such as skirt deflectors.

We encourage the industry to be proactive about maintenance and retrofitting equipment with the latest protective technology. The new code supersedes the current ASME A17.1 specifications for low-friction skirt panels and maximum step/skirt clearance and encompasses both new and existing equipment.

By complying with the new code requirements, escalator owners and operators further enhance rider safety. The Flash presentation as well as information on the ASME A17.1d Code requirements for new and existing escalators, can be found on NEII's Web site.
