The city of Chicago has mandated that all new buildings that require any public funds must be LEED certified, usually with a green roof. Any project with a green roof in its plan gets a faster permitting process. Green roofs are included in Chicago's plan to reduce heat in the city and cope with climate change. Chicago already has 359 green roofs covering almost 5.5 million sf — more than any other city in North America.
