Sotheby's rises with renovation

In the wake of a recent price-fixing scandal, the completion of the renovation of its New York City office and showroom in May was a welcome event for Sotheby's , the leading international art auction house.

Six new floors were added to the company's North American headquarters and its existing four floors were completely redesigned, providing 240,000 square feet of additional space. With four times the amount of exhibition area than before, all auction operations at the office are now under one roof.

The building's 10th floor, designed by Richard Gluckman of Gluckman Mayner Architects, New York City, features a dramatic 22,000-sq.-ft. roof-top gallery surrounded by floor-to-ceiling window-walls that reveal a panoramic view of Manhattan. The office's central galleries each have 18-ft.-high ceilings and are lighted by six 30-ft.-long skylights.

New York City-based architects Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates designed the overall renovation, and Swanke Hayden Connell designed the interior spaces.
