Construction nears completion on Libeskind's Contemporary Jewish Museum

S an Francisco-based Plant Construction Co. is nearing completion on the 63,000-sf, $46 million Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco's Yerba Buena cultural district. Museum staff began moving offices and artwork into the museum late last month. The museum was designed by Studio Daniel Libeskind, New York, and is an adaptive reuse of the city's historic Jessie Street power substation. Parts of the building are clad in a vibrant blue stainless-steel skin that incorporates the symbolic Hebrew letters “chet” and “yud,” which are key to the phrase “L'Chaim,” meaning “To Life!” The facility is scheduled to open to the public on June 8.
