Viñoly-designed Bronx County Hall of Justice set to open

C onstruction on the Bronx (N.Y.) County Hall of Justice has reached substantial completion and is slated this month. Designed by Rafael Viñoly Architects, the $275 million, L-shaped structure houses 47 courtrooms, seven grand jury rooms, offices, and underground parking. The building's courtrooms each house 60 spectators and 16 jurors, and many are equipped with the latest audio-visual and information technology. The grand jury rooms allow jurors to view evidence from individual flat screens, while custom-designed benches, cabinetry, and paneling in both room types recall historic court spaces. Green features include daylight harvesting, displacement ventilation, low-e glass, and energy-efficient lighting.
