Mixed-use stadium key to Mexico's World Cup bid

T
he Mexico City office of Dallas-based HKS has been named design architect for a soccer stadium and entertainment/education center in Torreon, Mexico. The centerpiece of the El Territorio Santos Modelo development is Corona Stadium, a 28,000-seat stadium for Club Santos Laguna. The mixed-use development is expected to be a key component of Mexico's World Cup bid for 2018. The multifunctional stadium is being designed so that 10,000 additional seats could be added should Mexico win the World Cup bid. The stadium also features 104 luxury suites, a restaurant, and a sports bar. A 120-room hotel, restaurants, entertainment facilities, and classrooms and educational facilities will be constructed adjacent to the stadium. Completion: fall 2009.
