Immigration Services to get four green facilities in Florida

Construction work has commenced on the first three of four new energy-efficient facilities for the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services in South Florida. Designed by JMWA Architects, Boca Raton, Fla., to meet LEED Silver certification, the four buildings will feature extensive daylighting, including perimeter windows, overhanging sunscreen devices, and screening panels. Moss & Associates, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., is serving as general contractor for the $60 million construction program, which began with an August 29 groundbreaking for the USCIS Hialeah, Kendall, and Miami field offices. Work on a fourth USCIS field office in Oakland Park, Fla., will begin soon. The design provides a secure environment for employees and visitors while maintaining an inviting image. For example, security setbacks will be enhanced with a combination of seating walls, concrete planters, and other landscape elements that ensure security, yet create an open and welcoming public environment.
