Chicago dance company to get sustainable theater

Muntu, a company specializing in progressive interpretations of African and African-American dance, will soon be the first African dance company in the nation to have a permanent home and the sole Chicago-based ensemble to own its performance space. The company's new $18.5 million, 44,000-sf home will include a 400-seat proscenium-style theater, rehearsal studios, and meeting spaces. The Alter Group, Skokie, Ill., is the design/build program manager, with Chicago-based Krueck & Sexton Architects as the design architect. The design/build team is aiming to keep future operating costs low with sustainable features like high-efficiency glazing.
