New African-American cultural center coming to Charlotte





The Afro-American Cultural Center will soon get a new home in Charlotte, N.C. The new cultural center is a key component of Charlotte's cultural and arts district, a $1 billion, 1.5 million-sf mixed-use development anchored by the 48-story Wachovia Tower. Other arts facilities in the planned development will include a 1,200-seat theater and the Bechtler Art Museum. The complex will also include retail space and underground parking. The Afro-American Cultural Center was designed by the Freelon Group of Research Triangle Park, N.C. Batson-Cook of West Point, Ga., is the CM. Expected completion: May 2009.
