U.S. Green Building Council proposes two Optimize Energy points for LEED certification

In accordance with direction from its Board of Directors and its LEED Steering Committee to immediately increase the LEED Green Building Rating System's impact in reducing building energy related greenhouse gas emissions, USGBC is proposing to update all balloted commercial LEED Green Building Rating Systems with the following change:

All LEED projects are required to achieve two (2) Optimize Energy Performance points. The two point additional requirement goes into effect for all LEED projects registering two weeks after the date of USGBC member approval. LEED for Homes or LEED for Neighborhood Development projects are exempt from this requirement. Pending member approval, this requirement will go into effect June 26th, 2007.

The two mandatory points will count towards the project's LEED certification. Project teams will be reminded of this change at time of registration, through LEED Online, and illustrated in the rating system and reference guide documents.

Member Ballot
The USGBC is seeking member approval to release the LEED Optimize Energy Performance, Mandatory Point Minimum for use. The member ballot is the final step in the process used to develop, test, evaluate, revise and publish LEED rating systems and credit mandates. Your organization is strongly encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to contribute to the evolution of the LEED Green Building Rating System.

Period for Vote
In accordance with the USGBC Balloting Policy, the ballot period will be open for 30 days from Monday, May 14th through Tuesday, June 12th, 2007 at 5:00 PM EDT.

Who can Vote
Only an organization’s USGBC Primary Contact can vote. To identify the primary contact for your organization, visit the USGBC Member database at https://www.usgbc.org, under Members>Member Directory and enter the name of your organization.
