Elgin, Illinois, hospital will use lake water to heat and cool itself

A new $200 million, 650,000-sf acute care hospital planned in Elgin, Ill., will take advantage of stable water temperatures from a nearby 15-acre lake to help heat and cool the interior spaces. The 2,400-ton lake-coupled geothermal system, designed by Rock Island, Ill.-based KJWW Engineering Consultants, could save owner Sherman Health as much as $1 million annually in gas and electric costs.
KJWW is providing structural, MEP, fire protection, and technology engineering design services for the 255-bed replacement hospital. The design team also includes Shepley Bulfinch Richardson & Abbott, Boston, and Loebl Schlossman and Hackl, Chicago. Boldt Consulting Services, Milwaukee, is managing construction of the facility.
