Connecticut gets its first LEED-rated student housing facility

Centennial Hall, Western Connecticut State University's new 128,000-sf residence hall at its Danbury campus, is the first facility of its kind to receive a LEED certification in the state (the facility is LEED Certified). The four-story residence hall includes 90 student suites, 12 suites for resident assistants, and one suite for the residential director. An adjacent, four-story parking garage has spaces for 439 cars serving the new dorm as well as two adjacent residence halls. Green features include water-efficient landscaping, a “cool” roof, energy-efficient HVAC systems that exceed state code by 40%, eco-friendly materials, construction waste recycling, daylight harvesting in 90% of the interior space, and 20% locally manufactured materials. Konover Construction, Farmington, Conn., and Herman S. Newman Partners Architects, New Haven, collaborated on the design-build project.
