Miami mixed-use tower will use wind and sun for powerStaffDecember 1, 2006Building Design and Construction
Miami-based Nexus Development Group has been granted city approval to build a $40 million “green” mixed-use tower in Miami's Design District that will house 113 condo units, 20,000 sf of offices, and 5,400 sf of retail. The 25-story tower, called COR, will feature wind turbines integrated into the exterior skin to help power the building. Photovoltaic panels and solar hot water will also help reduce energy costs. A 10-inch-thick exoskeleton will provide thermal mass for insulation, shading, enclosure for terraces, and armatures for turbines. The studio, one-bedroom, and two-story penthouse units are priced from $400,000 to $1 million and will feature Energy Star appliances, recycled glass tile flooring, and bamboo flooring. The 25-story tower is being designed by local architect OPPENheim architecture + design, with structural engineer Ysrael Seinuk and energy consultants Buro Happold, both based in New York.
