Tilt-up on the rise: record-setting wall goes up in Hollywood, Fla.

The world's tallest tilt-up concrete wall, measuring an impressive 96 feet, 6 inches tall, was hoisted into position at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Fla., last month, setting a new record for the tilt-up concrete industry and besting the previous record holder by five feet. The panel, which required 132,000 pounds of concrete, is part of the hotel/casino's 2,300-car Lucky Street garage project.

Concrete contractor Tiltcrete, Medley, Fla., said that creating the 1,158-sf wall took just a few days. The same wall would have required a month of work had it been constructed vertically rather than horizontally, as is the tilt-up method. Most of the wall's panels are six feet wide, with the largest panel measuring 12 feet wide.

"Five years ago, a panel this height would be unthinkable," said Timothy Streeter, president of Tiltcrete. "Now we're only limited by our imaginations and the size of the cranes we use."

When the garage is completed this spring, the seven-story, 800,000-sf facility will almost triple the amount of parking available at the hotel/casino.
