Cultural Center Will Honor Playwright August Wilson

Scheduled to break ground this spring in the Pittsburgh cultural district, the 80,000-sf, $35.9 million August Wilson Center for African American Culture will present performing arts, visual arts, and education programs celebrating the contributions of African Americans to the Pittsburgh area. Designed by architect Allison G. Williams, FAIA, principal with Perkins+Will, the center will have a 500-seat theater; a flexible 200-seat performance space; a 4,000-sf permanent exhibition gallery; a 4,000-sf gallery for changing art exhibitions; and a music café with a 1,500-sf seating area. Dallas-based Turner Construction is the construction manager. Sterling Contracting LLC and Ebony Development LLC—both Pittsburgh-based African American-owned firms—are also on the project team.
