Design flaws raise roof

The mechanism that opens and closes the retractable roof at Milwaukee’s Miller Park is showing signs of premature wear, which stadium district and construction officials attribute to design errors and defective workmanship (See BD&C, 5/01, page 90). HCH Miller Park Joint Venture, the general contractor on the park, which opened last April, says that there are problems with assembly bearings in some of the pivot system’s bogies. Roof builder Mitsubishi Heavy Industries of America, Houston, says it is dealing with the problems, and that the roof is safe.
