University of Virginia Gets a Jeffersonian-Style Arena

The University of Virginia's planned 15,000-seat, multipurpose arena in Charlottesville will combine modern design with elements of the Jeffersonian style. The arena's white columns and red brick exterior, for instance, will replicate buildings throughout the historic campus, which was founded by Thomas Jefferson in 1819. Charlottesville-based VMDO Architects and Ellerbe Becket of Kansas City, Mo., designed the arena, which will replace the 40-year-old University Hall when completed in the summer of 2006.
