'School of the Future' Under Way in Philadelphia

The School District of Philadelphia has broken ground on its "School of the Future." Being built in partnership with Microsoft, the $46 million facility will aim to be the most technologically advanced school in the world. Wireless and mobile technology will be infused across the curriculum in the 168,000-sf facility, located near the Philadelphia Zoo and Fairmount Park. The local office of Gilbane Building Co., Providence, R.I., and Felder and Felder of Philadelphia are the construction managers on the project, with Hopewell, N.J.-based Prisco Group as the architect. The school is scheduled for completion in late summer of 2006. School district CEO Paul Vallas is planning to pursue LEED Gold certification for the facility.
