Form-based Code Development Approved in Arlington

Washington, D.C.-based WDG Architecture has completed the design of Columbia Center, a new mixed-use project located in Arlington, Va. The 480,000-sf development is the first to follow the Columbia Pike form-based code and receive approval to proceed. Incorporating New Urbanist and smart growth principles, form-based codes are a form of zoning that focuses more on size, form, and placement of development as opposed to issues of density and land use. The Building Team includes Girard Engineering of McLean, Va. (M/E engineer), Fernandez & Associates of Falls Church, Va. (structural engineering), Cerami and Associates of New York (acoustical engineering), and Stephenson & Good of Alexandria, Va. (landscape architecture).
