Design-Builders Capture Third Great Lakes Naval Project

A three-firm design-build team has been awarded its third project at the Great Lakes (Ill.) Naval Base. The team of Blinderman Construction, M+W Zander, and Clark Construction, all Chicago offices, will design and construct a $36.4 million processing day barracks for the Great Lakes Recruit Training Center. The training center is site of basic training for all enlisted U.S. Navy recruits, graduating more than 1,000 recruits every week.

Named the USS Pearl Harbor, the barracks will be tailored for the in-processing of new recruits. The facility will be fully enclosed and will include its own galley and classrooms. Conditioned walkways will connect the building to neighboring structures.

M+W Zander is designing the barracks, with Clark Construction and Blinderman Construction sharing the role of project manager and GC. Completion date: December 2006.
